Writing Coach (Part-Time)
Writing Coach (Part-Time) - Interface Education Services
- Must be based in California. Bay Area preferred.
- $30–$35 per hour, depending on experience
About Interface
Interface Education Services has worked with nearly two thousand families over almost twenty years. What began as a college counseling practice has evolved into a developmental program supporting students from early high school through young adulthood.
We see the college application as one step in a longer process of self-understanding and communication. Writing is where that process becomes visible and concrete.
The Role
We are seeking a part-time Writing Coach to work with students in one-on-one and small-group settings. You will support personal essays and application writing for colleges, summer programs, honors programs, and scholarships.
You will implement the Interface Writing Curriculum while adapting it to individual students. This role reports to the Associate Director of Writing Programs and works in coordination with college counselors.
Candidates must be based in California. Bay Area applicants are preferred. The role is remote with flexible scheduling, with required availability during afternoons, evenings, and weekends in peak admissions season.
What the Work Involves
You will:
- Coach students through drafting and revising personal essays and short-form application writing
- Lead one-on-one and small-group writing sessions
- Teach creative nonfiction fundamentals including structure, voice, and narrative focus
- Apply the Interface Writing Curriculum in structured sessions
- Review and edit student drafts across multiple revision cycles
- Coordinate with college counselors and internal teams on student progress
- Support selected student writing for publication opportunities
- Participate in training sessions and staff meetings
Who We Are Looking For
You have experience as both a writer and a writing instructor or coach. You are comfortable working closely with students on early-stage, unpolished writing and helping them develop it into clear, effective prose.
You can guide students without over-writing their voice. You are comfortable with ambiguity in drafts and know how to move students toward clarity through questions, structure, and feedback.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in creative writing or related field (required)
- MA, MFA, or PhD preferred
- 3–5+ years of experience in writing instruction, tutoring, or coaching
- Experience with college essay writing or creative nonfiction
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Comfort working with English language learners and diverse student populations
Additional commitments include:
- One annual in-person Interface Education Services meeting
- One to two in-person writing workshops per year
- Occasional virtual workshops
- Monthly or bi-monthly staff meetings
